Using Participatory Approaches for Developing Effective Prevention and Health Promotion Programs

Dr. Wilson discussed her experience in developing community-based trials using participatory methods over the past 3 decades. A framework for tailoring programs to the needs of participants will also be outlined through examples from her clinical trials to improve health among families and underserved communities.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Wilson is the Director of the Behavioral Medicine Research Group at the University of South Carolina. Her research focuses on developing theory-based interventions for health promotion and disease prevention in low-income, ethnic minority adolescents and their families. Her theoretical approach integrates bio-ecological models, family systems, motivation, behavioral, and cultural approaches for understanding social and environmental influences of long-term health behavior change. She has served as a primary investigator on more than 50 grants, supported by National Institutes of Health, Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the National Kidney Foundation. She was the 2017 Past President of the Society for Health Psychology and the 2014 Past President of the Society of Behavioral Medicine. Among her many awards, she received the Senior Scientist Award from the Society for Health Psychology and a Presidential Citation for her leadership in research, mentoring and service to professional societies by the American Psychological Association. She has published over 200 peer reviewed articles and book chapters.
